Lost and dumped dogs are being destroyed just a week after being taken into care.
Councils put down 21 strays a day as over 110,000 ditched dogs wander UK streets, figures show.
Nearly one in three pets will be lost at least once in its life, yet 72% of owners don’t know their pet can be killed or rehomed unless it is reclaimed within seven days.
The Dogs Trust annual survey also found most owners were too embarrassed to talk to work mates about their missing mutts and 64% of those with dogs were unaware councils were responsible for strays.
On the plus side, the number of abandoned dogs handled by councils in the year to this April fell from 111,986 to 110,675 compared with the previous 12 months and 10,084 pets were reunited with their owners thanks to microchips.
Dogs Trust chief executive Clarissa Baldwin said: “We’re calling on dog owners across the UK to come along to one of our free microchipping events at www.chipmydog.org.uk.”
